How many footprints would a footprint print, if a footprint could print SOW?

SUSTAINABILITY

At SOW - Seeds of Wellness®and at our holding company, Benexia®, we are passionate not only about chia but about the earth from where we harvest it.  According to an article in Science, while our access to land, water, and energy diminishes, demand for food is expected to continue increasing for at least another 40 years, making the urgency to reduce the environmental impact of our food system of even greater importance.  This month we want to commemorate Earth Day with a few ideas of how we believe change is within our grasp.

We are a profoundly planet-based company.  We strive to eat healthy while respecting our earth, which is where we got our obsession with chia. Incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets isn’t only healthy, it may just be the best way to protect our environment from the high carbon emissions associated with animal alternatives, but all plants are not created equal and neither is their impact on our earth.

As we become more aware of the ways in which our consumption affects our soils, climate, and biodiversity, Seeds of Wellness - SOW® offers delicious and sustainable options we can easily incorporate into our diets, helping us protect our earth from the comfort of our own kitchen.  There are a variety of factors we can focus on while choosing our products, in all of which SOW - Seeds of Wellness® stand exceptionally.

CO2:  Our carbon footprint measures the amount of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gasses released into the atmosphere as a result of our daily activities.  These gasses trap heat in our atmosphere and contribute to climate change.  Unfortunately, we emit these gasses every time we use fossil fuels as energy sources, as well as with our consumption choices. Our footprint depends largely on the way products we consume are made.  Benixia’s chia seeds are produced with regenerative farming practices which help trap the soils´ CO2 and moisture while also diminishing erosion. Our products are then produced at the plant using clean, efficient electricity that comes from the largest solar energy-producing region in the world.

WATER: Our water footprint is similarly measured by the amount of water used by us directly as well as the water needed to make everything we consume.  Climate change has severely affected the available drinking water in many regions of the world, and choosing more water-efficient foods is also a great way to protect our water resources.  Our fields are irrigated exclusively with natural rainfalls and, once harvested, the seeds continue their path to your table through a pasteurization and extraction process which uses absolutely NO water whatsoever and leaves zero waste.

BIODIVERSITY:  According to the book Principles of Biology, many scientists believe that the earth is entering a period of mass extinction stimulated by three main human activities: the destruction of habitat, the introduction of exotic species, and over-harvesting.  Benexia® is mindful of our habitat, which is why all of their fields not only practice year-round crop rotation, but they also include a 40-meter perimeter of dense native forest and diverse vegetation.  This perimeter protects the crops and soil from wind and water erosion and promotes biodiversity and plant pollination, essentially preserving the entire local natural ecosystem.

SOIL:  Erosion isn’t the only thing affecting our fields and future food sources. The quality of the earth’s soils has been degenerating for years as our population grows and the need for greater turn-out pressures farmers to cultivate for the short-run, depleting their soils of nutrients while harming the environment as a consequence. Benexia® farmers not only practice no-till and direct sowing to preserve nutrients, but they also practice crop rotations, which help maintain the local economy while providing and preserving even more earthly nutrients for their next cultivation.

Packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants, our chia super seeds may be nutritionally small but mighty, but environmentally, they are small but tiny.  The environmental impact that their farming and production have on the planet is minimal: Their water and carbon footprints are minuscule, while their methods for preserving local biodiversity, soil nutrients, and moisture are noteworthy.  We at SOW - Seeds of Wellness® believe every individual has the power to change the planet. The choice is ours to lower our emissions and move towards a more sustainable lifestyle for the preservation of our loving planet.  Every planet-based choice we make contributes to protecting the environment: focusing on plant-based foods; choosing foods with low carbon and water footprints; choosing products from companies who share our environmental principles.  Join us, and make a difference for the planet!
